When can I apply to renew my ikamet izni, and what protects me between application and decision?

General information, not legal advice. For high-stakes decisions, confirm with the official institution in the next-step below, or consult a qualified Turkish lawyer.

Pending expert review. This fact is sourced but has not yet been reviewed by an independent legal expert. Treat as a starting point.

Renewal applications have to be submitted within the 60 days before your ikamet expires, and in any case before the expiry date. You file with the valilik.

When you submit a renewal, you receive a harca tabi olmayan belge (no-fee document). Even if your ikamet expires while you're waiting on the renewal decision, this receipt lets you legally remain in Türkiye until the decision lands. The renewed ikamet's validity then runs from the day the previous one expired — no gap in your residency record.

Watch-outs
  • Don't lose the receipt. It's your legal proof of stay while the renewal is processed. Carry it with your passport at all times.
  • Submitting on day 1 of the 60-day window gives the most processing buffer. Waiting until day 50 puts pressure on a system that doesn't move faster for late applicants.
  • The receipt protects against overstay fines and penalties. It does not protect against deportation if the renewal is ultimately refused — at that point the deportation rules in law-06 apply normally.
Next step

Mark your calendar at 60 days before expiry. Apply that day. Save the receipt as a PDF and keep a paper copy with your passport. The renewal reminders tool will schedule the alert if you don't trust your own calendar.
