What happens to my ikamet if I change my university, faculty, or department?
General information, not legal advice. For high-stakes decisions, confirm with the official institution in the next-step below, or consult a qualified Turkish lawyer.
Pending expert review. This fact is sourced but has not yet been reviewed by an independent legal expert. Treat as a starting point.
Three scenarios with different outcomes:
A. Same institution, change of faculty or department:
- Your existing ikamet stays valid, provided you (a) don't take a study break and (b) notify Göç İdaresi on time.
- If your existing permit duration is shorter than the new programme, it gets extended to match.
B. Same city, change of institution:
- Same as scenario A: existing ikamet stays valid, with possible extension.
C. Moving to a DIFFERENT city to continue studies:
- Your existing ikamet is cancelled by your destination province's valilik.
- A new ikamet is issued for your new programme's full duration.
Watch-outs
- A study break — even short — breaks the continuity rule. You may need a fresh ikamet application instead of a transfer.
- Always notify Göç İdaresi BEFORE the change, not after. Late notification creates compliance issues.
- The destination city's valilik handles the cancellation + reissue — you'll typically need to coordinate with them in person.
Next step
If planning a change, contact the destination İl Göç İdaresi directorate (Müdürlüğü) (Provincial Migration Directorate) first to confirm the documents and process for your specific case.
