Who qualifies for an Öğrenci İkamet İzni (Student Residence Permit) in Türkiye?
General information, not legal advice. For high-stakes decisions, confirm with the official institution in the next-step below, or consult a qualified Turkish lawyer.

The student residence permit (Öğrenci İkamet İzni) covers two distinct groups, and the rules for each differ in ways most students don't notice until they hit them.
Primary and secondary school students without a family residence permit qualify directly. Students at the same school level who already hold a family permit don't need to switch to a student permit — until they turn 18. The day they do, the family-permit pathway closes for student purposes and the student permit becomes the route.
Higher-education students qualify at every level enrolled at a Turkish institution: ön lisans (associate), lisans (bachelor's), yüksek lisans (master's), doktora (PhD), TUS (medical specialisation), and DUS (dental specialisation). The pathway is the same; the duration of the permit follows the duration of the programme you're enrolled in.
Watch-outs
- The student permit sponsors your spouse and children only for a family residence permit. Parents, siblings, and other relatives cannot be brought through your student status — they need their own permit pathway.
- 18-year-olds at primary or secondary level holding a family permit must switch to a student permit when they turn 18 if still in school. The switch is on you to initiate; the family permit doesn't roll over automatically.
- TÖMER (Turkish language prep) students don't use the Öğrenci İkamet İzni. The route there is the Kısa Dönem İkamet İzni (Short-Term Residence Permit) under sub-category 10. Different paperwork, different rules.
Next step
Confirm your enrolment is registered with YÖK Başkanlığı before applying. Göç İdaresi verifies student status against YÖK records — if you submit before YÖK shows you as enrolled, the application stalls or returns for re-submission.
