How long can I stay in Türkiye on a visa or visa-exemption?

General information, not legal advice. For high-stakes decisions, confirm with the official institution in the next-step below, or consult a qualified Turkish lawyer.

Pending expert review. This fact is sourced but has not yet been reviewed by an independent legal expert. Treat as a starting point.

A maximum of 90 days within any rolling 180-day period, total. The visa or visa-exemption period itself cannot allow more. Any stay beyond 90 days requires an ikamet izni — the visa won't extend, and the exemption doesn't restart at the border.

The rule is in Law 6458 Article 11(1) and applies whether you came in on a tourist visa or under visa exemption. "Rolling 180-day period" is the part that catches most people out.

Watch-outs
  • The 90/180 rule counts cumulatively across multiple trips. If you've been in Türkiye for 88 of the last 180 days, you have 2 days of legal stay left — not a fresh 90.
  • This is the same model as the Schengen 90/180 rule, but Türkiye is not in Schengen. Your Schengen days and your Türkiye days are tracked separately by different border systems.
  • Exceeding this limit triggers deportation-eligibility under Law 6458 Article 54(1)(e). An overstay that feels small ("just three days") still carries the full deportation consequence.
Next step

If you intend to stay longer than 90 days, apply for an ikamet izni before your 90 days run out. Applying after the visa expires moves you into first-time visa-period trouble — a different and harder problem.
