Yes. The TÖMER Turkish-language prep year is mandatory for almost all Türkiye Bursları scholars. Even if you applied with an IELTS score and were accepted into a 100%-English program, you still spend your first year studying Turkish.
The target is C1 proficiency by the end of the 9-month course — enough to navigate daily life, interact with government institutions, and integrate into Turkish society.
Watch-outs
- The only way to skip TÖMER is an official C1 Turkish certificate from Yunus Emre Enstitüsü or a recognised university TÖMER centre, held before arrival. After arrival is too late.
- Failure has real consequences. TÖMER is laborious, especially for students in dense quantitative fields. Failing the C1 exam at year-end can suspend or terminate the scholarship and send you home.

If you receive the scholarship, start learning basic Turkish (A1/A2) using free apps or YouTube tutorials before arrival. The intensive TÖMER year is much more manageable when you arrive with the alphabet, basic grammar, and 200 words already in hand.
