What do I do if I transfer to a university in a different city?
General information, not legal advice. For high-stakes decisions, confirm with the official institution in the next-step below, or consult a qualified Turkish lawyer.
Pending expert review. This fact is sourced but has not yet been reviewed by an independent legal expert. Treat as a starting point.
Within 10 days of the transfer, you must submit a fresh ikamet application via e-ikamet.goc.gov.tr, selecting your new city. Then bring the complete document set to the new university's designated office. This is critical for keeping your legal stay status valid.
Watch-outs
- This is a 10-day deadline — tighter than the same-city 20-day rule (fact
permits-15). Don't conflate the two. - Failure here breaks your legal residence.
- Your existing ikamet will be cancelled by the new city's valilik and a fresh one issued for your new programme's duration.
Next step
Move-day rule of thumb: register at the new university on day 1, start the e-ikamet new application on day 2, submit documents to the new university's office by day 7.
