How long can Türkiye ban me from re-entering, and on what grounds?
General information, not legal advice. For high-stakes decisions, confirm with the official institution in the next-step below, or consult a qualified Turkish lawyer.
Pending expert review. This fact is sourced but has not yet been reviewed by an independent legal expert. Treat as a starting point.
Under Law 6458 Articles 9 and 10, Türkiye can impose an entry ban (giriş yasağı) on two categories:
- Foreigners deemed risky for kamu düzeni (public order), kamu güvenliği (public security), or kamu sağlığı (public health).
- All foreigners who have been deported.
Duration:
- Up to 5 years automatically.
- The Genel Müdürlük (Directorate-General of Migration Management) can extend the ban by up to 10 more years for serious public-order or public-security threats.
- Maximum total: 15 years.
Watch-outs
- Entry bans are issued by Genel Müdürlük or valiliks (provincial governorates). You're notified at the border or at the valilik that imposed it, and your appeal rights are stated in the notification.
- A short overstay can still result in a multi-year ban. The consequences are disproportionate by design, not by accident — the ban is a deterrent.
- The ban runs from the date of departure, not the date of the order. Returning the day after the ban expires still requires a fresh visa or visa-exemption — the lifted ban doesn't grant entry on its own.
Next step
If you believe an entry ban has been imposed in error, consult a Turkish immigration lawyer about the appeal process. Appeals run on tight timelines — the notification you received states the deadline; don't lose it.
